Believe me, my journey has not been a simple journey of progress. There have been many ups and downs, and it is the choices that I made at each of those times that have helped shape what I have achieved.
Satya Nadella
Every journey differs from person to person, and every person have different journey.
Each journey have different pacing. What matters is not how fast or slow your pacing is, but your progress.
Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, Elon Musk and other successful people view success as a work in progress.
You don’t get successful overnight nor by only doing one great thing to be successful. You need to do little things every single day to succeed. But it does not require you to do all those little things perfectly everyday.
Building a habit takes time and it is true that there are days where you don’t want to do what you need to do. It’s okay to fail as long as you still stand up every time you fall.
If you want to be successful in life like Elon Musk and Warren Buffett, you might want to start building these 6 little things:
READ A BOOK THAT ISN’T DIRECTLY RELATED TO YOUR CAREER
Reading is a must if you want to succeed. But don’t limit yourself by only reading books that is directly related to your career. From time to time read books that will help you grow like self-development books, inspiring stories, fictions, and biographies to help you experience life from other perspective. Also, to develop your empathy.
Is developing empathy that important? It is. If you want to become an effective leader, you must develop your empathy. Because if not, how will you understand and share the feelings of your subordinates?
Expanding your knowledge beyond your expertise is also important because if you become the next CEO of your company, you need to be knowledgeable of more than one thing to effectively lead, build, and grow your company.
These are the reasons why Elon Musk read books that is not directly related to his career.
GET SWEATY
No! It’s not what you think. In this section, I don’t talk about exercising. What I mean by get sweaty is to develop the courage to do something beyond your comfort zone.
When we are afraid or unsure of something, we started to sweat and our heart beats are racing. Sometimes we wanted to die or faint rather than do something that is very new to us.
If you are afraid to speak in front of people, ask your pastor or your head to let you do the sermon or your department presentation to overcome your fear.
Doing something outside your comfort zone means you are leveling up. You are helping yourself to become better of something that you fear.
Fear is always there. So do as growth. The two can’t exist in the same space and time. Fear must leave in order for growth to flourish. Be brave enough to choose growth and brave enough to drive away fear for good.
EXERCISE
Exercise is essential to our well-being. Can you name a successful people and billionaire who don’t exercise at all? A number of self-made billionaires include exercise in their day to day life. Not only because they want to extend their lives but also to have more energy and creativity for their business and family.
GIVE BACK
The more you are bless with something, the more that you need to give. At the same time, if you want your business and life to flourish start giving back to people who deserves it, to the church and to those in need.
I’ve read and heard stories how people become successful by giving 10% of what they have to church and to those people in need. So we must make sure to give back to others.
TAKE A MOMENT TO REMEMBER YOUR COMPETITION
I play to win, whether during practice or a real game. And I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win.
Michael Jordan
If you don’t have any and you are looking for a powerful form of motivation, try to acknowledge your competitions and your doubters.
Having that kind of motivation, it pushes you to do everything in your power to succeed to prove your competitors and doubters wrong.
GET OUTSIDE AND THINK
Sometimes, having a meeting in the office limits us to be creative. Because of common working environment, we tend to lose our focus and creativity. Meeting takes longer than expected for thinking of new concepts takes time.
People like Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg and other entrepreneurs hold their meetings on foot because it helps them out to brainstorm new concepts.
Walking outside increases creativity and improve problem-solving skills and it’s a great way to incorporate exercise in your busy schedule. Killing two birds with one stone.
Next time you wanted to have a meeting with your staff, your head or business partners, try to go outside and have a meeting on foot.
